Quality Innovates: LANXESS Qingdao Laboratory Develops a New Green Product

LANXESS Qingdao laboratory’s independently-developed environmentally-friendly peptizer rated as a “Key Project of Enterprise Technology Innovation in Qingdao 2018”

Shanghai – April  17, 2019 – Recently, Rhenogran 2668, a new environmentally-friendly peptizer independently developed by specialty chemicals company LANXESS’ Rhein Chemie R&D lab, was rated as a “Key Project of Enterprise Technology Innovation in Qingdao 2018”. LANXESS’ Qingdao site is an important location of LANXESS Rhein Chemie (RCH) business unit in China which has been successfully operated for 20 years.

“I am very pleased that our local team can make such achievements in innovative R&D thanks to our commitment to the concept of ‘Quality Works’ and our focus on innovation in environmentally-friendly production processes,” said Ming Cheng Chien, President of LANXESS Asia Pacific. At the NPC & CPPCC this year, strengthening eco-friendly and green development became an important topic of concern. In the government report, Premier Li Keqiang said the country should “pursue innovation driven development and foster new growth drivers”. Ming Cheng Chien emphasized: “Sustainable development rooted in local market is the strategy that LANXESS has always adhered to. We will work with our partners to promote the green and high-quality development of the industry.”

With the gradual advancement of domestic environmental policies and the continuous improvement of international environmental standards such as the EU’s REACH Regulation, China’s rubber industry is paying more and more attention to environmental issues, especially the substitution of toxic and hazardous substances.

Peptizer can reduce the Mooney viscosity of rubber and improve compound’s processibility. Traditional pentachlorothiophenol peptizer is widely used due to its excellent peptizing effect and low cost. However, the main component pentachlorothiophenol is carcinogenic. So it has been banned explicitly in Europe and USA at present base on the requirement of REACH. Rubber manufacturers in China are increasingly prohibiting its use too.

Rubber Application Laboratory of RCH Qingdao has developed a “green” alternative peptizer: Rhenogran 2668, to meet the requirement of REACH.  Its effective ingredient to replace pentachlorothiophenol is the combination of disulfide and metal complex, which is non-toxic and harmless to the environment and human health. The thermoplastic, environment friendly, fully compatible polymer binder which is combined with special dispersing agents allows a quick absorption and excellent dispersion in the polymer. In contrast to Rhenogran 2668 all competing products are powdery and flaky, prone to dust emissions and inhalation by workers during operation at present.

Rhenogran 2668 in pre-dispersed master batch pellets improves the finished products’ ability and speed to disperse, thus avoiding dust generation and improving the storage stability. At the same time, it can accelerate the rupture of rubber molecular chain, reduce the Mooney viscosity of rubber compound and shorten the mixing time, thus resulting in much lower energy consumption and emissions in processing.
In addition to the replacement of harmful substances, cleaner production is another focus of the industry, to which rubber accelerator is the key. Traditional accelerators for rubber vulcanization such as DPG, DOTG and ETU are harmful compounds. They will volatilize or decompose during rubber mixing and vulcanization into a volatile organic compound which is the precursor to smog and will react with other pollutants in the atmosphere under the action of light to form particles, namely PM2.5. The eco-friendly rubber accelerators Rhenogran SDT-50, Rhenogran XLA-60 and Rhenogran MTT-80 developed by Rhein Chemie can effectively substitute the three traditional products respectively in cleaner production with innovative technologies to guarantee sustainable development of the industry.

LANXESS’ Qingdao site started to produce the Rhenogran family of rubber additives in 1999. It mainly produces high-quality additives for rubber processing and lubricants to provide high-quality environmental solutions for the rubber industry. LANXESS’ Qingdao site has been expanding since its establishment, with great progress made in safety. It has won titles such as “Advanced Unit for Safe Production” and “Model Enterprise for Safety Culture of Qingdao”.
