High-performance Lewatit ion exchange resins for water treatment

LANXESS at the EAW 2010 (Everything About Water) trade fair, Chennai, India, January 7 to 9, 2010

Mumbai -

Mumbai, 18 Dec 2009 – Specialty chemicals group LANXESS will be showcasing its high-performance ion exchange resins at the EAW Expo 2010 (Everything About Water) international trade fair, which is taking place in Chennai, India, from January 7 to 9. The focus will be on premium products from the established Lewatit range for the fields of industrial water treatment, catalysis, chemical processes and food. With Lewatit MonoPlus S 108 and Lewatit MonoPlus S 108 H for example, the Ion Exchange Resins business unit is presenting a new generation of high-performance gel-type cation exchange resins for industrial water treatment.

At the congress taking place in parallel to the EAW fair, Dr. Rudolf Wagner, Manager of Technical Applications in the Ion Exchange Resins business unit, will give a presentation on “the utilization of ion exchange resins for the purification of biodiesel and as catalysts for the esterification of free fatty acids”. In a second presentation, Wagner will explore “new approaches to the removal of trace impurities from aqueous solutions with adsorber resins”.

LANXESS India Private Limited is currently constructing a site for the manufacture of ion exchange resins and rubber chemicals in Gujarat state, India, at a cost of around EUR 50 million. The Indian subsidiary is on track to start up its new Jhagadia site in 2010. The two facilities will employ 230 workers in total. The new ion exchange resins plant will supply high performance Lewatit products used in more than 600 applications worldwide.

In terms of investment volume this is the biggest project undertaken by LANXESS’s Ion Exchange Resins business unit since the end of the 1990s when it built the new production facility in Bitterfeld. "We are the only company in the ion exchange industry that invested within ten years in two new world-scale plants, first the one in Bitterfeld and now the one in Jhagadia," says Dr. Michael Zobel, head of the Ion Exchange Resins business unit.
