Quality Secures: LANXESS Urethane Systems Offers Customized Solutions for ATMs and Roller Coasters

PU China 2018, Aug. 1–3, Booth 55, SWEECC

Aug. 1, 2018, Shanghai – German specialty chemicals company LANXESS is showcasing solutions for polyurethane applications at the 16th PU China 2018 held from Aug. 1-3 in Shanghai. From ATMs to roller coasters, wind power, mining and transportation, the urethane systems on display are garnering attention.

“Urethane applications demand high wear, abrasion, chemical  and UV resistance, for which LANXESS can offer  a broad range of customized high performance systems,” said Dr. Markus Eckert, head of the LANXESS Urethane Systems (URE) business unit. “analytical work, formulation development and synthesis of novel products allows us to satisfy market needs with a high degree of technical differentiation. ”

Precision and Wear Resistance

One highlight at the LANXESS booth is the ATM roller. Rubber rollers and combing separators are crucial components in  ATM machines used in everyday life. They have demanding requirements for dimensional and hardness stability. Polyurethane materialsfrom LANXESS can satisfy these needs with their heat-resistant and antistatic qualities. They ensure that an ATM machine can have a service life covering transactions of 8 million banknotes with full accuracy – dispensing  them at a rate of five notes per second without adhering to each other.

As key exhibits at the LANXESS booth, Adiprene and Vibrathane cast prepolymersare used in wheels of modern high speed roller coasters. The hot cast polyurethane can be formulated to exhibit low hysteresis, absorbing less energy and producing lesser heat during use. This avoids heat build up in the wheels and allows higher load and speed, ensuring that the coaster is securely fixed to its  steel tracks.

Making Green Energy More Convenient

LANXESS Urethane Systems also protect and secure submarine cables in offshore wind power installations. In extremely harsh environments, these cables have to resist corrosion and wear as well as disperse the impact of ocean currents. On offshore oil production platforms, polyurethane materials can help meet requirements for limited bending of pipelines, bending stress protection of risers or hoses and securing of submarine pipes and cables.

Polyurethane systems by LANXESS are widely used around the world for equipment seals (including hydraulic support seals, engineering mechanical seals), screens (fine screens, flip-flow screens, drainage screens, ordinary screens), cleaners (low speed cleaner, high speed cleaner), pipe lining and swirlers. With a longer service life, these components can reduce maintenance costs while improving mining efficiency.

Customized Solutions

LANXESS Urethane Systems provides a wide range of products: hot cast polyurethane systems including prepolymers, chain extenders and additives; special waterborne polyurethane dispersions (PUDs); terminated prepolymers and additives (USCs) for surface coatings, adhesives and sealants; special thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers (TPUs) and special polyester polyols. The systems designed by LANXESS can adapt to the most severe environments and display extraordinary dynamic performance in related application areas.

“LANXESS has been a partner and supplier designated by component manufacturers and application developers throughout the Asia-Pacific region. In the future,  LANXESS Urethane Systems business unit can build on the application and development center in Nanjing, the R&D center in Naugatuck in the U.S. and the new PUD laboratory in Latina, Italy to better develop customized solutions for customer needs,” said Tom Liu, Vice President of LANXESS Urethane Systems Business Unit, APAC.
