Quality Reinforcement with Rhenogran® Rubber Additives

LANXESS’ Rhein Chemie business unit at the 2017 International Elastomer Conference

Pittsburgh, PA – October 9, 2017– LANXESS Corporation’s Rhein Chemie business unit will showcase the latest products and services for the rubber industry at this year’s International Elastomer Conference from October 9 – 12 in Cleveland, Ohio, in booth #549.  This includes a broad range of pre-dispersed chemicals, processing promoters, vulcanization and filler activators, anti-sun check waxes, release agents, tire marking inks and high-performance (vulcanization) bladders.

Additionally, Joel Neilsen, Technical Applications Specialist for business unit Rhein Chemie, will present new research in a paper titled “Predispersed Short Fibers:  A Cost Effective Way to Reinforce Rubber Compounds” during the Technical Meeting on Thursday, October 12 at 8:30 a.m.

Quality Performs:  Rhenogran short fibers strike balance between performance and efficiency

The paper focuses on two types of short fibers – Rhenogran® wood pulp type and Rhenogran® aramid type – used as additives in rubber compounds.  Rubber products, such as tires, automotive components, industrial or technical rubber goods, are under continual pressure of improved performance, while concurrently facing downward cost pressure due to competition and increasing consumer expectations.  These often conflicting demands require that the performance and cost of rubber compounds be continuously evaluated to be sure that the best performance is being delivered in the most cost effective manner.  Reinforcement is an extremely important aspect of compounding, and plays a significant part in this cost vs. performance analysis.  The use of short fibers as an additive to rubber compounds has been shown to both improve physical properties and have a lowering effect on the cost of producing rubber products.  Neilsen’s paper will examine the manufacturing processes and physical features of the two types of Rhenogran short fiber dispersions, and demonstrate their influence on rubber compounds.

Business unit Rhein Chemie: focused on specialty business

Following the acquisition of U.S. company  Chemtura Corporation in April, 2017, LANXESS has revised its organizational structure.  The two business lines Rubber Additives Business (RAB) and Colorant Additives Business (CAB) now both belong to the Rhein Chemie business unit.  With this restructuring, LANXESS has adopted a more targeted approach with an even stronger customer focus.  The name Rhein Chemie, which has been a hallmark of success in the chemical industry for more than 125 years, remains the umbrella brand for the rubber and colorants businesses of LANXESS.  Lubricant, plastic additives and flame retardant additives business, meanwhile, has been transferred to LANXESS’ Additives business unit.  Together, these two business units form the Specialty Additives segment in the company’s extended organizational structure.

The Rhein Chemie business unit currently has around 1,000 employees around the world and supplies more than 2,000 products to over 3,000 customers across the globe.
