Newbury to Hong Kong – an epic journey by bike

  • Newbury hosted start of charity ride of 10,000 miles
  • Jon Lee and Micheil Gordon aim to raise £20,000 for WaterAid

Newbury hosted the start of the epic charity bike journey from the UK to Hong Kong recently. Jon Lee and Micheil Gordon, two Environmental Science graduates and keen cyclists, are making the 10-month journey to raise funds for WaterAid. Whilst increasing awareness of an important environmental issue at the same time.

The trip of 10,000 miles has been made possible through the sponsorship of the speciality chemicals company LANXESS.

Jon and Micheil were welcomed at the Town Hall by the Mayor of Newbury, Cllr Dr Ian Grose, and LANXESS UK Ltd. Managing Director Kim O’Connor.  LANXESS handed over a symbolic check for its donation of £10,000 to WaterAid. Jon and Micheil set for their ambitious journey also an ambitious fundraising target: they aim to raise £20,000.

Kim O’Connor commented: “We are delighted to be able to support Jon and Micheil on this truly epic fundraising journey and they are not only raising money, but raising awareness. Providing pure drinking water is a major problem in many countries. LANXESS makes innovative products that help solving this problem, getting rid of substances that are polluting the water and thus make it pure and drinkable. We were first approached in 2010, which was our first global year of water and are genuinely thrilled to be supporting the passion of these cyclists on their exciting trek.”

The route will also allow Micheil and Jon to visit LANXESS operations throughout Europe and Hong Kong. They will be travelling through France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and plan to arrive in Hong Kong, China before the end of 2011.
