Recently, the world leading specialty chemical company LANXESS Greater China has harvested two CSR awards. On January 24, LANXESS received the “CSR Enterprise Award” at the 2nd China CSR Annual Summit. And a week ago, LANXESS just won the title of “Top Responsible Enterprise” in 2017 China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Corporate Citizen Model List. LANXESS strives to combine safety, environmental protection, social responsibility and commercial efficiency in its business operations, and find the way to achieve sustainable development in China by carrying on a series of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities.

Ming Cheng Chien, CEO of LANXESS Greater China said: "It is a great honor for LANXESS to open the year 2018 with these significant awards. For LANXESS, corporate responsibility and sustainable actions reflect our pursuit of high quality in all aspects of our business operations. During the past 13 years, LANXESS China strived to fulfill its social responsibility by actively implementing environmental protection, sustainable supply chain, education support, product innovation and process optimization in a way that benefits both the enterprise and the society. In LANXESS,we call it 'Good for business, good for society' ”.

Environmental Responsibility - A Significant Reduction in Carbon Emissions

LANXESS has always followed high standards in product, process and technology. “Quality works” means not only our commitment to customers, but also to social responsibility. Improved technology and advanced process not only brings high quality products, but also can effectively reduce pollutant emissions and minimize impacts on the environment.

In December 2017, LANXESS announced that it will invest about EUR20 million to build a high performance plastics plant in Changzhou, to provide high-tech plastics for automotive, electrical and electronic industry. It is calculated that replacing traditional metal auto parts with high-performance plastics can effectively reduce the vehicle weight up to 50%. Moreover, fuel consumption will be decreased by 4% for every 50 kg vehicle weight reduction, and carbon dioxide emissions per hundred kilometers can be reduced by 0.5 kg.

Another example, the first sustainable pigment production process in China -- the patented "Ningbo Process" can recycle all by-products in LANXESS Ningbo site. For example, a special catalyst is used to convert nitrous oxide to air and water; the process meeting the highest international environmental standards will reduce energy demands of about 80%, thereby greatly lowering carbon dioxide equivalents in the production.

Promoting Stainable Development of Chemical Industry

In 2011, LANXESS, together with another five chemical companies, launched the "Together for Sustainability" initiative. Through supplier assessment and training, the initiative helps suppliers improve their sustainable performance in the environment, products, processes and services, thus promoting sustainable and healthy development along the whole supply chain.

LANXESS and China Petroleum & Chemical Industry Federation(CPCIF) have jointly organized 5 HSE workshops since 2014, and built a platform for communication between the government and chemical industry parks and enterprises. In the workshops, participants share their sights on safety, sustainable and efficient solutions and production processes, and offer suggestions on sustainable transformation, contributing to the sustainable development of China’s chemical industry.

Support for Science Education

In 2008, LANXESS worked with Qingdao University of Science & Technology to establish a Research Center in Qingdao. In 2011, LANXESS signed a memorandum of understanding with Changzhou Vocational Institute of Engineering, and set up a vocational education and staff training base. In the last 13 years, LANXESS has provided scholarships for hundreds of college and high school students, and it has, for six years in a row, donated to left-behind students in Suichuan County, Jiangxi, one of the poor counties supported by the country. In 2016, it set up LANXESS Goodwill Primary School in Zhuxi Village, Zhutian Country, Suichuan County.

Since 2012, LANXESS has organized nine “Public Open Day” activities in its sites in Changzhou, Wuxi, Qingdao and Liyang, and invited nearly 2000 residents, students, professionals, volunteers and media representatives to visit LANXESS site. By organizing safety & chemical classes, plant visits and chemical experiment kits donating, LANXESS shares knowledge of environmental protection and safety with the public, so as to promote local ecological civilization construction and green development.

Since 2015, LANXESS has successfully held the “Clean Water for Better Life” College Students’ Water Resources Protection and Utilization Competition for three years in a row, supported for a total of 43 projects from 13 universities, including Tsinghua University, Tongji University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Wuhan University and Xiamen University and so on. 199 college students participating in, who were guided and encouraged by 23 LANXESS volunteers, have put forward creative ideas on coping with challenges in China’s water resources.
