LANXESS: “Quality Works” to Upgrade Beauty

March 19, 2018, Shanghai – Specialty chemicals company LANXESS attends the 2018 Personal Care and Homecare Ingredients (PCHi) trade show in Shanghai with Distribution (LD), LANXESS group’s sales and trading partner to showcase a range of popular high-quality ingredients for personal care products.

Adhering to the "Quality Works" principle and philosophy, and through strict process controls, LANXESS provides many customers in the cosmetics industry with high-purity, safe, and low-odor ingredients to meet the stringent requirements of mid and high-end cosmetics ingredients.

High-end ingredients popular with consumers seeking extra quality

“We supply the cosmetics industry with high-quality cosmetic ingredients. By strictly controlling the content of impurities, LANXESS products are characterized by high purity, low odor, low irritation, and high safety. They are especially suitable for 'low-fragrance' or 'fragrance-free' formulations for mid and high-end cosmetics that are popular among consumers,” says Michael Bader, head of Personal Care at LANXESS Distribution GmbH. “As Chinese consumers continue their escalation of consumer spending, they are gaining a more comprehensive knowledge of cosmetics. Thus, LANXESS’ competitive quality advantages will surely become more prominent."

Michael Bader's point of view is supported by relevant data. According to the National Bureau of Statistics of China, retail sales of cosmetics in the Chinese market reached RMB 228.5 billion yuan from January to November 2017, an increase of 13.5% year on year. Bain & Company's China Shopper Report 2017 also points out that sales of personal care products in China have maintained a growth of more than 8% for many years. Total sales are driven not only by more volumes but by a rising unit price. Analysts believe that the unit price increase reflects the industry's trend towards a high-quality and high-end market where premium cosmetics are gaining a growing market share.

Another major manifestation of consumption upgrade in the cosmetics industry is that product ingredients are being subjected to more and more stringent safety supervision and regulation. " In Europe, the European Commission constantly monitors and revises regulations on cosmetics. And now the regulations on cosmetics in China are also more strict and specific, which is clearly creating an ideal and favorable market environment for LANXESS with its focus on high-quality ingredients," says Michael Bader.

For example, LANXESS antibacterial products with their high purity, low odor, and strict control of specific impurities, are especially suitable for formulations with high safety and sensory requirements of ingredients. They are widely used in many products of the world's leading skincare brands.

PUROLAN® isoparaffin series – higher purity, higher safety, better skinfeel

As one of the main products of LD, the PUROLAN® isoparaffin series (including isododecane, i.e. IDD, and isohexadecane, i.e. IHD), with its extremely high purity, excellent texture and reliable safety performance, has attracted much attention.

"The PUROLAN® range of isoparaffins is obtained from isobutene oligomerization and features higher purity compared to isoparaffins obtained from petroleum distillation, with IDD’s purity above 98% and IHD’s purity above 99%. Also, the isoparaffins in the PUROLAN® range stand out because of their high spreadability and their very low odor. In particular, they are free of aromatic impurities." says Jiming Yan, Sales Manager of LD China.

It is reported that PUROLAN® isohexadecane products (IHD) are widely used in skin care products like night creams, eye creams, repair creams, masks and make-up products, such as cleansing oils, sunscreens, and BB creams. "IHD is odorless, colorless, clear, silky and refreshing to the touch. It has received very positive feedback from customers," says Jiming Yan.

PUROLAN® isododecane products (IDDs) are considered as alternatives to volatile siloxanes (D4, D5). Volatile siloxanes are currently among the most commonly used ingredients in the cosmetics industry and are widely used in the fields of skin care, make-up, hair care and the like. However, in many European countries, D4 has been identified as persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic; D5 has been identified as bioaccumulative. Due to their toxicity and their inability to be fully metabolized by the organism, volatile siloxanes are thought to have a lasting impact on the human body and the environment. At present, the EU requires that the content of D4 and D5 in rinse-off products should not exceed 0.1%. The EU has proposed to nominate D4 under the Stockholm Convention of Persistent Organic Pollutants. This could lead to very tight restrictions on the global use of D4.At the PCHi new technology press conference, LANXESS will deliver a one-hour keynote speech to discuss with Chinese customers the status quo, prospects and related technical issues of isododecane as an alternative to volatile siloxanes.

"PUROLAN® IDD volatilizes 20-25% faster and is safer than cyclomethicone. Currently, in the cosmetics market, more and more customers choose to replace volatile siloxanes with our isoparaffins. PUROLAN® IDD is already one of our best-selling product lines," said Jiming Yan.

PCHi is a top trade event designed for manufacturers of cosmetics, personal care and homecare ingredients to join the Chinese and Asia Pacific markets to meet the needs of the rapidly evolving industry. It is China's sole industry event focused on helping ingredient suppliers find manufacturers of cosmetics, personal care, and homecare products to meet their growing production needs. As China stands at the center of the global marketplace, PCHi also provides a platform for domestic and foreign ingredient suppliers to communicate with manufacturers of cosmetics, personal care, and homecare products.
