LANXESS Completes Modernization Project at North American Technical Competence Center Construction

  • Investment in new technology and equipment to offer Inorganic Pigments customers the best technical service and support

USA, US -

Pittsburgh, PA – October 9, 2018 – Specialty chemicals company LANXESS has invested in new equipment and technology for its North American Technical Competence Center – Construction (NACCC) for Inorganic Pigments to make it the most modern lab for colored concrete in the U.S. and  offer customers the best possible technical services and support.  With the recent completion of the modernization project, the Technical Competence Center in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania fulfills the highest standards in terms of safety, regulatory compliance and quality.

Inorganic pigments from LANXESS are used to color concrete elements.  Colored concrete is an increasingly popular component of contemporary building designs, providing a modern, stylish finish for commercial, municipal and residential properties.  No longer simply utilitarian, concrete products are a more visible element of design, leaving all aspects from color consistency to the quality of the finish on display.  As a result, construction industry customers are demanding a higher level of technical support in coloring their products.

When it comes to pigments in concrete applications, LANXESS has established itself as an expert resource, with more than 90 years of experience in pigment manufacturing, and nearly 40 years of technical application assistance at the North American Technical Competence Centers.  A step further – LANXESS created the Bayferrox® Color Workshop, an educational training program for customers that combines comprehensive classroom learning and hands-on technical experience at the NACCC.  The intensive, two-and-a-half-day program was designed to teach customers how to make colored concrete products with more consistency, more economically and with greater confidence.  Workshop participants learn proper techniques for color matching, selection of pigments  and how to optimize pigment formulation.  Entering its 28th consecutive year, the workshop covers elements of color theory, pigments and pigment loadings, proper handling of iron oxides, automated metering systems and parameters that can affect the final color of cementitious products.

“Thanks to this investment, LANXESS can expand technical services and continue offering our customers valuable training programs”, said Michael Matheny, Technical Service Manager Construction for Inorganic Pigments Group.  “The NACCC technology upgrades will further improve and enhance the Bayferrox Color Workshop experience.”

Upgrades included a redesign of the existing footprint to provide additional training space, along with new lighting to provide enhanced visibility, critically important visual color interpretation and rendering.  A high definition monitor provides interactive visual aids to facilitate both internal and external training, and new ventilation hoods designed to comply with anticipated safety and environmental regulations and standards make the facility future-ready.

In addition to the training workshops, the NACCC supports customers through all stages of the process, from coloring to mixing, and solar reflectance testing.  Primary technical support includes color matching, metering equipment recommendations, troubleshooting, pigment optimization, raw material evaluations, plant-to-plant correlations, green building initiatives, solar reflectance testing, and technical literature.
